Android Player Setup
Preparing the device
Before installing the ScreenCloud Player, work through the following on the Android device.
Perform a factory reset if this is a repurposed device.
Connect to your network, either WiFi or Ethernet via a USB adapter.
Set the date and time to automatic: Settings, then General management, then Date and time, then enable Automatic date and time.
Turn off any screen lock, PIN, or sleep timeout that would interrupt playback: Settings, then Display, then Screen timeout, set to Never or the maximum available.
Disable any power-saving or battery optimization settings that may kill background processes.
Make sure Google Play Services are up to date if you plan to install from the Play Store.
Installing the player
There are two ways to install the ScreenCloud Player on Android: through the Google Play Store, or by sideloading the APK. Installing via the Google Play Store allows the app to receive Over-The-Air (OTA) updates, meaning it auto-updates on its own. The APK route requires manually installing the latest version.
Installing from the Google Play Store
Open the Google Play Store on the device.
Search for ScreenCloud Player and select the result published by ScreenCloud.
Select Install and wait for the download to complete.
Open the app. It will display a pairing code on screen.
If asked to enabled Start at boot, approve.
Installing by sideloading the APK
Use this method if the device does not have access to the Google Play Store, or if you need to deploy a specific version of the player.
On the device, go to Settings, then Security (or Privacy, depending on the Android version), and enable Install unknown apps or Unknown sources for the browser or file manager you will use to transfer the APK.
Download the ScreenCloud Player APK from screencloud.com/download and scroll to the Android section.
Transfer the APK to the device by USB, a shared network drive, or downloading directly in a browser on the device.
Open a file manager on the device, navigate to the APK file, and select it to begin installation.
Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation.
Open the ScreenCloud Player. It will display a pairing code on screen.
Enabling autostart on Android consumer tablets
Some Android consumer tablets restrict apps from starting automatically at boot. Without this setting, the ScreenCloud Player will not restart after a reboot, which breaks the Start at Boot feature.
Open Settings and search for Autostart, or navigate to Settings, then Apps, then Manage apps, then ScreenCloud Player.
Select ScreenCloud Player and enable the Autostart toggle.
Return to Settings and go to Battery (or Battery saver).
Find ScreenCloud Player in the battery settings list.
Set the battery mode to No restrictions or Don't optimise.
Reboot the device and confirm the ScreenCloud Player launches automatically.
If the player still does not autostart after these steps, check whether a third-party security or cleaner app is running on the device and disable it.
Pairing the screen
With the ScreenCloud Player open and a pairing code displayed on screen, log in to your ScreenCloud account.
Select Add a screen.
Select Android from the platform list.
Enter the pairing code shown on the device.
Give the screen a name and assign it to a space if required.
Select Confirm. The screen will connect and begin playing content.
Android Player Management
Settings sidebar
Swipe from the left edge of the screen, or press the Back button on some devices, while the player is running to open the settings sidebar. It lets you:
View the device name and pairing status
Check the current player version
Force a content refresh
Access network settings
Restart or uninstall the player
Daily restart
Open the settings sidebar and look for Daily restart or Scheduled restart. Set a time for the restart and save. Off-peak hours are recommended. The player restarts at that time each day, which clears memory and helps prevent playback issues on devices running continuously.
Auto-update
The player updates automatically when a new version is available, provided the device has an active internet connection. On devices installed through the Play Store, updates follow the Play Store's own update policy. On sideloaded installs, updates are pushed directly by the player.
To check the current player version, open the settings sidebar and look under the device name.
Proxy settings
If your network requires a proxy, configure it at the Android OS level before launching the ScreenCloud Player.
Go to Settings, then WiFi, long-press your network, and select Modify network.
Expand Advanced options and set Proxy to Manual.
Enter the proxy hostname and port.
Save the settings and relaunch the ScreenCloud Player.
For Ethernet connections, proxy settings are typically configured at the router or network level rather than on the device itself.
Uninstalling the player
Open Settings, then Apps (or Application manager).
Find ScreenCloud Player in the list and select it.
Select Uninstall and confirm.
Troubleshooting ScreenCloud on Android
Work through these before contacting support. For anything not covered here, check the known errors and fixes below this table.
Step | Task | How to do it |
1 | Clear the cache | Open the settings sidebar and select Clear Cache. |
2 | Power cycle the device | Turn it off for a few minutes, then back on. |
3 | Update the Android OS | Open Settings, then System, then Software update (or About phone, then System update), and install any update available. |
4 | Update the ScreenCloud Player | Check the version in the settings sidebar. Play Store installs update automatically; for sideloaded installs, download the latest APK and install it over the existing version. |
5 | Check for video or black screen issues | If videos appear black or fail to play, see Video or black screen issues below. |
6 | Check for OS-level restrictions | Confirm Autostart and No restrictions (battery) are set as described in Android Player Setup. |
7 | Check the power adapter | A failing adapter causes intermittent instability. |
8 | Check for overheating | Confirm the device has proper airflow. |
9 | Test the internet connection | Confirm the device has a strong, stable connection. |
10 | Remove unnecessary apps | So the device is dedicated to running the player only. |
11 | Reinstall the player | Uninstall, reboot, and reinstall from the Play Store or the latest APK. |
12 | Factory reset the device | Last resort. Reinstall the player fresh afterwards. |
If the problem persists after all of the above, the device may be underpowered for the content you are running.
Player not starting at boot
Player not starting at boot
This applies to Android tablet and mobile devices. Some Android builds restrict apps from starting automatically at boot, which breaks the Start at Boot feature.
To grant the permission manually, open Settings, go to Manage Apps, find ScreenCloud Player, select it, then go to Permissions, then Autostart, and make sure it is enabled.
Screen showing a pairing code after previously being set up
Screen showing a pairing code after previously being set up
This usually means the player lost its pairing token, often after a factory reset, a full app data clear, or a significant OS update.
Re-pair the screen using the code shown, following the Pairing the screen steps in Android Player Setup. If the screen already exists in your ScreenCloud account, remove it first to avoid a duplicate entry.
Content not updating or showing a blank screen
Content not updating or showing a blank screen
Force a refresh from the settings sidebar.
Check content is assigned. Open the screen in your ScreenCloud account and confirm a layout is published to it.
Check the network connection.
Restart the player and wait up to two minutes for content to sync.
If using a proxy, confirm it is not blocking requests to ScreenCloud's content delivery domains.
Video or black screen issues
Video or black screen issues
This mainly affects older Android hardware, or models outside the recommended list above. Work through these in order.
Clear the cache and reboot the device. Cached files can become corrupted over time, which stops video from rendering. Open the settings sidebar, select Clear Cache, then power cycle the device.
Update the Android OS. Newer OS versions include updated video drivers and codec support. Go to Settings, then System, then Software update, and install any update available.
Convert the video to a supported format. The most reliable format is H.264 (AVC) video in an MP4 container with AAC audio, at 30fps or lower, since the Android player does not support higher frame rates. A free tool such as HandBrake can convert a problem file: open the video in HandBrake, select the Fast 1080p 30 preset, and export. Upload the converted file to replace the original in your ScreenCloud account.
Adjust the length of the video. Some older or non-recommended Android devices fail to play very short clips, typically 5 to 10 seconds. Extending the clip to 20 or 30 seconds resolves this on affected hardware. If you see this on newer, recommended hardware, contact support rather than working around it.
FAQ
Can I use any Android phone or tablet as a signage player?
Yes, as long as it meets the minimum requirements. Consumer phones and tablets will work but are not recommended for permanent installations, since they typically lack auto-start support, sustained performance under continuous operation, and commercial-grade reliability features.
Is Amazon Fire OS supported?
Yes, but through a separate Fire OS player rather than this Android one, since Fire OS has its own installation method and quirks. See Fire OS Hardware and Player for setup, or, if you're buying new Amazon hardware, How to Set Up ScreenCloud on the Amazon Signage Stick for Digital Signage for the recommended device.
Does the player work on Android devices without Google Play Services?
It can, provided you can sideload the APK. Some commercial Android signage devices ship without Google Play Services. What you lose is automatic Play Store updates, so APK updates need to be pushed manually.
My Android tablet keeps closing the player after a reboot. How do I fix this?
This is usually the device's aggressive app lifecycle management. Follow the autostart steps in Android Player Setup above: grant Autostart permission and set the ScreenCloud Player battery mode to No restrictions.
How do I update the player on a sideloaded install?
The player attempts to self-update when a new version is available and the device has internet access. If it does not update automatically, download the latest APK from screencloud.com/download and install it over the existing installation. You do not need to uninstall first.
What should I do if the player keeps crashing or freezing?
Work through Troubleshooting above. The most common causes on Android are insufficient RAM, background processes consuming memory, and OS-level battery or process restrictions killing the app. Enabling a daily restart and switching to dedicated commercial signage hardware resolves most persistent stability issues.
