ScreenCloud OS is our own Linux-based operating system, built for digital signage and nothing else. It runs on the Station P1 Pro and the earlier Station P1, and the ScreenCloud Player is part of the operating system, so there is no app to install. A device arrives, connects to your network and shows a pairing code.
Because ScreenCloud OS controls the whole device, it handles things a Player running on a third-party operating system cannot: enterprise Wi-Fi authentication, static IP and proxy configuration, and unattended fleet provisioning from a USB flash drive. This article covers the hardware, what to prepare before a device arrives, the three ways to set one up, and how to manage and troubleshoot it afterwards.
ScreenCloud OS Hardware
Two models run ScreenCloud OS. The Station P1 Pro is the current device and the one you will receive if you order today. The Station P1 is its predecessor and remains fully supported, receiving the same operating system updates.

The practical difference between the two is Wi-Fi. The Station P1 Pro can join 5 GHz networks and use the ac protocol, which is roughly three times faster than the n protocol the Station P1 tops out at. The Station P1 is limited to 2.4 GHz, which travels further but carries less. Everything else about how the two devices behave is the same.
The 3.5 mm audio out port is present on both models but is not currently supported.
Telling the two models apart
If you have inherited a device and are not sure which model it is, check the sticker on the underside. The model name is listed under Model. Failing that, there are two visible differences.
The Station P1 Pro has chamfered edges on the top of the case, which show as a silver strip running round the top edge. The Station P1 does not.
The Station P1 Pro has a power button where the Station P1 has its audio out port. On the Pro, the audio out port has moved to sit beneath the micro SD card slot.

Preparing for Setup
Most failed ScreenCloud OS deployments fail on the network, not the hardware. The work in this section is what separates a device that pairs in five minutes from one that sits on an error screen while you chase your IT team.
Before the device arrives
Confirm you have a free screen license. Pairing a screen consumes a licence from your subscription.
Choose your display. For anything running more than eight hours a day, seven days a week, use a commercial-grade display rather than a consumer television. Commercial panels are built for continuous operation and dissipate heat properly.
Check your HDMI cable. The included cable is 1.5 metres, which is often not enough. Use a standard or high-speed HDMI cable if you need a longer one, and specifically avoid HDMI cables with Ethernet, which cause problems when the device power cycles.
Sort mounting and cable management. Check the wall material and the display's VESA mounting pattern before buying a mount, and plan how cables will be concealed.
Build your content. Nothing stops you setting up collections, layouts and schedules in your ScreenCloud account before any hardware arrives.
Preparing your network
Send the domain list in Domains & Servers to Whitelist for ScreenCloud to whoever runs your network before the device arrives. ScreenCloud OS devices also need the AWS IoT endpoints listed in that article, which are specific to ScreenCloud hardware and easy to miss.
On a corporate, campus or otherwise restricted network, confirm each of the following as well. Anything you cannot answer here becomes a fault you diagnose on site later.
Whether the network filters by MAC address, and if so, get the device's MAC address added to the allowlist before you connect it
Whether the network requires a static IP, and if so, the IP address, gateway, subnet mask and DNS servers
Whether a proxy server is required, and if so, its address and port
Which Ethernet port the device will use, that it is active, and that it sits on a VLAN with internet access
Whether the Wi-Fi network is enterprise-authenticated, and if so, the security protocol, credentials and any certificates
Whether there is a captive portal on the network. ScreenCloud OS cannot log in through one, so it will need to be bypassed for the device
ScreenCloud OS does not work on networks using deep packet inspection or SSL interception, such as Zscaler. These conflict with the certificates burned into the device at the hardware level and the connection will drop. Either bypass SSL inspection for the device or allow all ScreenCloud and AWS IoT endpoints.

Preparing a provisioning USB flash drive
You need a provisioning USB flash drive for any Wi-Fi setup that the on-screen menu cannot handle, for any enterprise network, and for deploying more than a handful of devices. It is worth preparing these in advance.
8 GB capacity or larger is plenty
The drive must be formatted as FAT, FAT16 or FAT32. Nothing else is recognised. See How to Create a FAT-Formatted USB Flash Drive
One drive can provision as many devices as you like, as long as they share the same connection type and network
If the drive is formatted incorrectly, the device tells you so on screen with a USB incorrectly formatted message.
Setting Up a ScreenCloud OS Device
Connecting the hardware
Unpack the device and its accessories.
If the device will use Wi-Fi, screw on the supplied antenna. Skip this if you are using Ethernet.
Connect the device to your display, using either the HDMI port at the rear or a USB-C to DisplayPort cable from the front USB-C port. Use a standard or high-speed HDMI cable, and not one with Ethernet.
If you are setting up through the on-screen menu, connect a USB mouse. If you may need recovery mode, connect a wired USB keyboard instead. Mac keyboards are not supported.
Connect the power adapter, then set your display to the matching input.
On first boot you will see the ScreenCloud logo, a Starting ScreenCloudOS message and the operating system version number, followed by the setup screen.
Choosing a setup method
There are three ways to get a device onto your network. Pick based on your network, not on device count.

Setting up over Ethernet
Connect a LAN cable to the port at the rear of the device and power it on.
The device reads its settings from DHCP, displays them on screen, then applies them after 30 seconds. To cancel, power the device off or insert a provisioning USB flash drive during that window.
A pairing code appears once the device is online.
To move a device from Ethernet to Wi-Fi later, remove the LAN cable and restart. The device will connect to Wi-Fi automatically, but only if Wi-Fi credentials were already supplied through a provisioning USB flash drive. Without them, you will need to provision the device again.
Setting up with the on-screen menu
With a mouse connected, select Start Setup on the setup screen, then work through the steps. A small keyboard icon in the bottom right corner opens an on-screen keyboard whenever you need to type.
Set the date and time.
Set your time zone by typing your town or city. This determines whether scheduled content plays when you expect it to, so get it right.
Choose WiFi as the network type and select Next.
Pick your network from the list once the scan finishes.
Set authentication to Basic or None, toggle Hidden Network on if the SSID is not broadcast, and enter the password if there is one. Select Next.
If the network needs TCP/IP, DNS, Proxy or NTP settings, enter them here. Otherwise select Join Network.
Wait while the device applies the configuration and checks for an operating system update. You will see Configuration complete, then the Player and a pairing code.
Enterprise Wi-Fi cannot be configured through the on-screen menu. If your network uses per-user credentials or certificates, use USB provisioning instead.
If you see Your configuration has not been configured correctly, power the device off and on to return to the setup screen and run through it again. For other error messages, see the troubleshooting section below.
Setting up with a provisioning USB flash drive
Provisioning writes a configuration file to a USB flash drive on your computer, which the device reads on boot. Nobody at the installation site needs network credentials or technical knowledge, which is what makes this the right method for fleets.
Go to scos.screencloud.com/start on your computer with the FAT-formatted drive connected, and select Got it, let's start. The generator has a basic section on the left and an advanced section on the right.
Basic configuration
Choose Wi-Fi or Ethernet (LAN).
For Wi-Fi, enter the network name (SSID). If the SSID is hidden, toggle that on in the advanced section. For Ethernet you do not need an SSID or password.
Choose the authentication type.
Basic uses a WPA or WPA2 personal network with a single shared password. Enter the password.
Enterprise uses a WPA or WPA2 enterprise network, where each user has their own credentials. Choose either TLS or Protected EAP (PEAP) as the security protocol. TLS needs an identity and a user private key password, and optionally CA certificates, user certificates and a private key. PEAP needs an identity and password, and optionally CA certificates.
Select your time zone.
Select Generate Configuration.
Advanced configuration
Use the right-hand side of the generator for anything your network imposes on top of basic connectivity.
TCP/IP. Set the IPv4 method to Automatic DHCP or Manual. Manual requires an IP address and gateway.
DNS. Enter your DNS server addresses.
Proxy. Enter the host and port.
NTP. Enter one or more time servers if your network requires specific ones.
Applying the configuration
Move the downloaded file to the root directory of the USB flash drive, not into a folder.
Check the filename is exactly
scosprov.json. If your browser saved it asscosprov(1).jsonor similar, rename it. The device will not recognise anything else.Insert the drive into the device and power it on.
The device applies the network configuration, checks for an operating system update and installs one if available. This normally takes a few minutes.
A pairing code appears when the device is online.
Inserting a new provisioning file into an already-configured device does nothing. The existing configuration is not overwritten. To apply new settings, factory reset the device first, then insert the drive.
Pairing your screen
Once the pairing code is on screen, log in to your ScreenCloud account, add a new screen, enter the code and name the screen. You can then assign content to it. See Pairing, Designing and Managing Your Screens for the full process.
Managing ScreenCloud OS Devices
Opening the Player settings menu
Connect a wired mouse and click the transparent button in the top right corner of the screen. The settings menu slides in from the right. With a wired keyboard, press M instead.
The menu shows the device's IP address, MAC address, hostname, operating system version, device ID, network connection and current performance, and lets you reload the Player. This is where to look when your IT team asks for the MAC address of a device that is already installed.
Changing network settings after setup
Once configured, a device's network connection is deliberately locked down. How you change it depends on whether the device can still reach the old network.
Moving to Ethernet. Connect a LAN cable and restart the device. To go back to the original Wi-Fi network, remove the cable and restart.
Moving to a different Wi-Fi network, with the old one still reachable. If the old network used a shared password rather than enterprise authentication, create a mobile hotspot with the same SSID and password as the old network. The device will join it, and you can then reconfigure it for the new network.
Moving to a different Wi-Fi network, with the old one gone. Factory reset the device and provision it again for the new network. This is also the only route if the old network used enterprise authentication, because the hotspot method cannot reproduce it.
Remote Device Management can show a device's current network connection details, but it does not let you change the network configuration remotely. Network changes need to be made at the device.
Keeping ScreenCloud OS up to date
Devices update themselves over the air whenever a new version is released, so keep them online and there is nothing to do. Updates bring new features, fixes and security patches. Every release is listed in ScreenCloud OS Changelogs.
To check what a device is running, power it off and on and read the version on the startup screen, or open the settings menu.
Updating a device manually
A device that has been offline for a long stretch may need updating by hand. There are three methods, and which one you want depends on how much you need to wipe.

USB updater
Copy both the
scota.imgandscota.infofiles to an empty FAT-formatted USB flash drive, at the root of the drive.Connect a keyboard and display to the device, insert the drive, then power the device on.
When the ScreenCloud OS logo appears, press Ctrl + Alt + R repeatedly. The device loads, restarts and enters recovery mode.
Select Install Update and press Enter, then confirm with Yes.
When the update finishes you are returned to recovery mode. Unplug the power supply and plug it back in.
Check the version number on the startup screen.
SD updater and SD flasher
Write the relevant image file to a micro SD card using a tool such as Etcher.
Updater: firep1-3.1.6-SDUPDATER-RELEASE.img
Flasher: firep1-3.1.6-SDFLASHER-RELEASE.img
Connect the device to a display, insert the card and power the device on. It boots straight into the updater or flasher.
When prompted, remove the card, then unplug the power supply and plug it back in.
The device starts up at the setup screen, ready to be provisioned again.
With the SD flasher, the display may show nothing at all during the process. Wait until the device's LED turns purple, which means it has finished, then remove the card and restart.
Testing pre-release versions with the release channel and Canary
ScreenCloud OS has two update channels. Stable is the production version and the right setting for any screen in service. Canary receives pre-release builds as well as production ones, so you can test an upcoming version against your own content, network and environment before it reaches your estate, and report anything you find while it can still be fixed.
Set one device aside as your test device and put that one on Canary. Never put a production screen on it. A device may take up to an hour to pick up and display a new version after the channel changes.
To switch a device's channel, the device needs to be RDM connected. Open the screen in your ScreenCloud account, scroll to Remote Device Management in the right-hand panel, and select Stable or Canary under Release channel. See Controlling Your Screens with Remote Device Management (RDM) for the full range of RDM actions available for a screen.
To move a Canary device back to production immediately, reflash it with the SD flasher. Simply switching the channel back to Stable works, but the device will stay on its current build until the next production release.
Using recovery mode
Recovery mode is where you reset a device, install an update from USB or inspect its network configuration. It needs a wired USB keyboard. Mac keyboards are not supported.
Connect the keyboard to a USB port on the front of the device and leave it connected throughout.
Press Ctrl + Alt + R repeatedly as the device boots. Timing matters, so start as soon as the reboot screen appears and keep going. It often takes several attempts, and your display may show no signal while this happens, which is normal.
Navigate with the up and down arrow keys, confirm with Enter, and go back with Ctrl + C.
To leave, select Reboot and press Enter twice.
The menu offers four things worth knowing about.
Clear user data. Wipes everything stored on the device. This is the factory reset, and on its own it is enough.
Clear user data and environment. Also resets the boot counter. Use this only as a last resort, or when a device keeps reverting its network configuration from a static IP to DHCP after a reboot.
Show network config. Displays the connection type, whether the network is hidden or broadcast, and any errors or interruptions the device is seeing. Useful for diagnosing a device that connects but cannot reach the internet.
Install update. Installs an operating system image from a USB flash drive.
Factory resetting a device
Reset a device when you are moving it to a new network, when it will not boot, when the screen stays black, or when its network configuration has become unrecoverable.
Before you start, sort out the screen license. If you delete the screen from your account without planning, you may need a spare licence to pair the device again.
Unplug the power supply to power the device off completely. Do not rely on the power button.
Plug the power back in and press Ctrl + Alt + R repeatedly until recovery mode loads.
Select Clear User Data, press Enter to select OK, then confirm with Yes.
When it finishes, select Reboot and press Enter.
Set the device up again using any of the three provisioning methods.
If you cannot get into recovery mode with the keyboard, use the SD flasher instead, which resets the device without needing keyboard input at all.
Troubleshooting ScreenCloud OS
If a device goes offline
Work through these in order for a device that was previously online and has lost its connection. Stop when the screen comes back.
Power cycle it. Unplug the device for at least two minutes so the hardware and network components fully reset, then plug it back in and give it a few minutes.
Check the cables. Confirm power, HDMI and Ethernet are secure at both ends. If the display shows no signal, try a different HDMI input.
Check the network settings. Confirm the right SSID is selected and the password is correct, or for Ethernet, that the port is active and the device is getting an IP address.
Unpair and pair again. Unpair the screen in your ScreenCloud account, generate a new pairing code on the device, and pair it again.
Try a mobile hotspot. Create a hotspot using the same SSID and password as the original network. If the device comes online, the problem is the network itself: firewall rules, VLAN restrictions, DNS or credentials.
Restart the network equipment. The access point, router or switch the device depends on.
Factory reset. Reset the device and set it up from scratch.
Error messages on screen
Almost every error message on a ScreenCloud OS device points at the network configuration, and almost every fix means regenerating the provisioning file at scos.screencloud.com/start with the correct settings and inserting the drive again.

Advanced network problems with no error message
If a device will not connect and shows nothing specific on screen, one of these is usually the cause.
MAC address filtering. The device will not get an IP address until its MAC address is on the network allowlist. This has to be done before you connect it.
Static IP required. Get the IP address, gateway, subnet mask and DNS from IT, then apply them through the on-screen menu or USB provisioning.
Proxy required. Without proxy settings the device can look connected while having no internet access at all.
Enterprise Wi-Fi. Confirm the security type with IT, collect the credentials or certificates, and apply them through USB provisioning. The on-screen menu cannot do this.
Captive portal. The device cannot accept terms or log in through a browser. Use a different network, or ask IT to bypass the portal for the device's MAC address.
VLAN or port restrictions. Confirm the Ethernet port is active, on the right VLAN, and has internet access.
Weak Wi-Fi. Attach the antenna, move the device into stronger signal, use 5 GHz where available, or switch to Ethernet.
Faulty cable or hardware. Test with a known working cable and port.
Collecting savelogs
Savelogs pulls system log files off a device so support can diagnose what is happening. It is the right next step when a device will not enter recovery mode or is failing in a way you cannot pin down.
Prepare a USB flash drive with the savelog tool, following How to Use Savelog to Capture System Log Files.
Power the device off, insert the drive, then power it on.
Check the drive on your computer. If a folder named after the device ID has appeared, send its contents to support along with the device ID and your account name.
If no log files are created at all, record video of each failed step and have your purchase invoice number ready. That combination is what support needs to assess a warranty replacement.
Contacting support
If none of the above resolves it, contact the support team with the screen name, the device or screen ID, screenshots of any error messages, and the steps you have already tried.

FAQ
Do I need to install anything on a ScreenCloud OS device?
No. The Player is built into the operating system. Connect the device to your network and it shows a pairing code.
Is the Station P1 still supported?
Yes. It is discontinued and no longer sold, but it receives the same operating system updates as the Station P1 Pro. The only meaningful difference is that it cannot use 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
Can I run two displays from one device?
No. Both models support one display at a time, at up to 4K.
Can I set up an enterprise Wi-Fi network through the on-screen menu?
No. Enterprise authentication requires a provisioning USB flash drive.
I inserted a new provisioning drive but nothing changed. Why?
A configured device ignores new provisioning files. Factory reset it first, then insert the drive.
Why will the device not read my USB flash drive?
Either the drive is not formatted as FAT, FAT16 or FAT32, or the file is not named exactly scosprov.json and sitting at the root of the drive. Browsers often append a number to the filename on a repeat download.
Where do I find the MAC address of a device that is already installed?
Connect a wired mouse, click the transparent button in the top right corner to open the settings menu, and read it there alongside the IP address and device ID.
Do I need the Wi-Fi antenna if the device is on Ethernet?
No. It is only needed for Wi-Fi.
Can I use an HDMI cable with Ethernet?
No. Use a standard or high-speed HDMI cable without Ethernet. Cables with Ethernet cause problems when the device power cycles.
Why has my device not updated itself?
Updates arrive over the air, so a device that has been offline will be behind. Bring it back online and it will catch up, or update it manually from a USB flash drive or micro SD card.
